About Me

We are from Vilnius, Lithuania, Medardas Čobotas Third Age University (U3A) (hereinafter referred to as "MCTAU"). Thus, about 2,500 elderly people, mostly with university education, currently attend our MCTAU. Before retirement, they worked as Members of Parliament, scholars, judges, doctors, lecturers, journalists, managers of various ranks, etc. They are spread over 12 faculties and several art groups. I, Vitalius Skaržinskas, mainly attend and work in the Faculty of Politics. We listen to lectures of politicians, political scientists, philosophers, organize debates on various issues. Some of our "students" were born in exile, either in Siberia or elsewhere, because their parents were expelled from Lithuania by the Soviet occupation authorities. So, these people can tell about the post-war period: the KGB rampage, the Lithuanian guerrilla battles, the destruction of the Lithuanian intelligentsia. We still remember the criminal actions of the post-war and later Soviet authorities. Of course, there are special science centres in Lithuania that investigate the crimes committed by the occupants (both the Soviet authorities and the occupying Nazi Germany). The people of Lithuania (and our students) are now aware of the difference between democracy and totalitarianism. Knows and can tell what it meant to live in the Soviet Union and what it means to live in the European Union. We organize discussions, conferences on these issues and talk about what needs to be done to prevent war and save democracy. Most Lithuanian U3A are affiliated to the Lithuanian U3A association. The association has about 50 members (regionals U3A). Our university and association have also been involved in various projects: local and international. In the current time we are involved as partners in international project “Human Times” (European Remembrance, CERV).Mostly I follow CERV  (European remembrance, etc) calls.
