About Me

ABMES is a non-for-profit association of Brazilian private Universities, found 35 years ago to be the central voice of the private educational sector and the defender of the social inclusion program and National Education Plan in the Congress. ABMES has more than 1200 profit and non-for-profit Universities, spread all over the country. Due to the Brazilian historic and economic situation many private HEIs are reasonably small institutions (3-5 thousands students), focused on the local labor markets, providing bachelor & master education. But many Universities are the real giants, up to 150 thousands students, with all degrees: bachelor, master, PhD, MBA and life-learning courses. Just to make you imagine the size of this force – 87 percent of all enrollments in Brazil are in private Universities. If you want to know more about private education in Brazil, please see the article: José Janguiê Bezerra, Celso Niskier, Lioudmila Batourina.
