The International Association for Mediterranean Forests (AIFM) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) created in 1996, in Marseille (France). It’s the framework where Mediterranean people build the future of their woodland areas together.

Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience relating to Mediterranean forests and other wooded lands, in a transversal and multidisciplinary manner, at transnational level.

AIFM intervenes in 3 fields:

  • To carry out pilot actions to preserve and sustainably manage the 75 million hectares of Mediterranean wooded lands.
  • To develop and animate the community of public, private, and scientific Mediterranean actors, estimated at 5,000 people, through cooperation projects and the dissemination of know-how.
  • To raise public awareness on the challenges of Mediterranean forests. For instance, AIFM was very active during the last Mediterranean Forest Week and organized a booth on Mediterranean forests in FAO World Forestry Congress.

Experience

Since its creation, AIFM has participated in several European cooperation projects: Problematic (Interreg IIC, 1999-2001), RECOFORME (Interreg IIIB, 2003-2006), Qualigouv (MED, 2009-2012), Forclimadapt (MED, 2010-2013), Proforbiomed (MED, 2011-2014), Medland 2020 (MED, 2013-2014), INHERIT (Interreg MED, 2018-2022) and MEDLENTISK (Erasmus+, 2020-2022)

We were able to work on topics such as forests management, biodiversity and natural heritage protection, climate change adaptation, wood-energy, sustainable tourism, circular economy (forest products) and risk prevention.
