Znanje danes za uspešni jutri
Start date: Jul 6, 2014, End date: Jul 5, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Project title: Learn today to become successful tomorrow As experienced Gimnazija Ledina teachers being familiar with the disadvantages of traditional teaching methods, the school system and the broadly-based curriculum we detected signs that students who had not only been extremely successful in primary school but also identified as supremely gifted did not seem inclined to reach the advanced knowledge level once they entered secondary education. This is shown by different factors, such as the results they achieve in both the national PISA test and the Matura, their lack of motivation for different (extracurricular) activities and project work, and their not being highly creative or able of developing critical thinking. Therefore, we are aware that we need to gradually integrate the already adopted teaching methods with other more effective and creative methods as well as with an in-depth use of ICT. The project aimed to increase the level of the following key competences of our students: communication in the mother tongue and foreign languages (public performance skills, understanding, evaluating, and identifying relevant information), digital competence (the use of tablet PCs and optimisation of the existing ICT equipment), interpersonal and social competences (creative and cooperative learning, providing a stimulating and creative environment, environmental awareness), innovation and sense of initiative. In the long term, the project should facilitate a more effective personal development of young people. It should have a positive effect on their self-image (they will become aware of their own competences) and labour market integration into the Slovenian as well as European environment. Owing to the acquired competences, the participants of the project are now able to use better teaching methods in order to create a more effective, dynamic and interactive learning experience. We find it easier and more stimulating to teach and learn in a positive school climate among motivated teachers and students which should inevitably bring better results and consequently reduce the number of dropouts. Seven teachers teaching different subjects, ie. Slovenian, English, mathematics, philosophy, psychology and ecology, took part in the project. They enrolled in the course programmes offering a variety of effective modern teaching methods. After the training activities had finished our main focus of interest was: 1. dissemination of information about course programmes to the teachers of the same subject, 2. organising and running workshops for all staff members, 3. careful guidance of colleague teachers on how to integrate new educational practice into their teaching practice while offering them the possibility of classroom observation, 4. introduction of various innovative methods and good practice examples into the teaching practice, 5. evaluation of the achieved results (referring to teachers and students), 6. dissemination of the positive outcomes of the project to other schools and interested public (info day, the IATEFL conference, professional periodicals ...), 7. promotion of good practice ideas, ie. planning to work on strategic partnerships.
