Zlepšení komunikativních kompetencí učitelů ZŠ Odolena Voda
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project was evolved in the context of the wider discussion upon possibilities to improve language teaching at Primary School Odolena Voda. The priority of improvement was set by the school management in the previous school year 2012-13. Classrooms have been equipped by Interactive White Boards, Language Laboratory have been built, now children start with English right away in the first grade. English focused activities have been launched, e.g. children have started to attend English Theatre performance, English Competition has been carried out, the school has joined eTwinning network, but not all projects have ended up successfully. To see the situation clearly, a SWOT analysis has been done recently. The analysis, however, showed that the major weakness of the teaching process lies in the sphere of human resources. The problem is in increasing number of pupils, but vast majority of English teachers has no formal language teaching certificate. Their motivation to start professional development is unfortunately as low as their communication skills. Considering the fact that the Primary School cannot use any appropriate source for solving the situation, the Primary School is willing to use Erasmus plus funding scheme. As the first step for teachers to fight the communication barrier we see the improvement in the field of communication skills, which can we either language ones or communication by the means of information technologies. Our strategy to achieve the goal is to get the Erasmus plus funding and send four teachers to attend methodology courses in the UK. The content of the courses was chosen according the needs of our organisation but taking into account the preferences of the project participants. They are supposed to disseminate their experience in their classes or at methodology meetings when coming back from abroad. This will have an impact on language teaching methods, as well as the school image would increase, we believe. The possibility to participate in this project was offered to all teachers, but only four were interested. The project will take place during school holidays, the participants are going to attend professional development courses instead of having holidays. One of the teachers is a certified English teacher, three of them without any English teaching certificate. The content of the courses is as follows: a) Using ICT in teaching English, b) European issues and CLIL methods, c) Creative activities for YL, d) methodology for YL with practical examples of activities. As for management, the project has got its project manager who is responsible for the smooth preceeding of the project. All the files and documents are being kept, the context and goals were specified, the time schedule with important terms was set and the responsible person designated for every task. The final evaluation will be done for these three points of view: 1) formal processing of the project , 2) assessment of the objectives, 3) project participants will express their subjective assessment. The final result of the evaluation will be the recommendation in case of taking part in a similar project. To summarize the long-term asset of the project: Primary School Odolena Voda aspires to improve English language teaching and to increase motivation and willingness of teachers to join international project such as eTwinning activities or Edison (AIESEC) programmes.
