Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project ‘Experience is the best teacher’, submitted by Basic school of extended language teaching in Liberec, is focused on the development of methodological and language skills of our teachers who support the introduction of CLIL teaching. The project is based on the identified needs of teachers and goes along with the development plan of our school. In the case of teachers of vocational subjects on 2nd level we defined particularly the need to improve their language skills. As for the foreign language teachers it is the request to broaden and deepen the methodological skills associated with CLIL methods introduced on the 2nd level of our school. The main objective of the project is to improve the situation in these fields. The project is planned for the period September 2016 - August 2018.We have taken a number of options available in the Czech Republic to develop our teachers’ competences. It has been not only CLIL training of our German teachers in cooperation with a partner of our school - the Goethe Institute, but we have also participated in the project ‘School Without Borders’ where we have piloted CLIL textbooks Labyrinth in 8th and 9th grades. Lessons have been in German and also vocational subjects. A total of 20 teachers also participated in a workshop on the theme ‘CLIL in teaching and working with English textbooks Labyrinth’.As a part of further preparations for the planned project activities, our teachers have completed a preparatory language online course. Particularly the teachers of vocational subjects have had a chance to improve their foreign language skills. The selection of participants was held in the initial phase of the project. Interest from the teachers in further education in this way is great. To participate in the project, we have taken into account the motivation of the participants and their training needs in the Czech Republic and also the needs of our school in the future years. From this came the selection of 15 teachers who will travel abroad (the United Kingdom, Germany and France). Most of the participants are teaching on 2nd level. In the framework of the project 9 teachers of vocational subjects will attend a language course, which will help improve their language skills. After that they will gain more confidence in using the language, and will then be better able to assign CLIL activities into their teaching.6 teachers of foreign languages will increase their teaching competences and participate in workshops focused on the adoption of modern techniques (mobilization of students, work with errors, method of problem solving, methods of individualization, educational games, methods of work with multimedia equipment, etc.). That will be used in teaching a foreign language as well as within CLIL activities in collaboration with a teacher of vocational subject.Seminars will be tailored to each participant to meet the expectations of both - a participant and school management. After a course each participant will fill in an evaluation questionnaire and write a report on business trip. On the basis of these documents we will thoroughly evaluate the process and quality of the attended courses and eventually propose the appropriate adjustment of other educational events. This will ensure the highest possible effectiveness of funds spent, and also the highest achieved levels of linguistic and didactic competences of the project participants.Sub-objectives of the project, supporting the dissemination of the acquired knowledge and skills, are mainly sharing the experience and good practice and transferring information to other schools and the public, creating CLIL materials, realization of workshops for interested teachers in our and also other schools, deepening cooperation within the interdisciplinary relationships and ultimately improving the profile of our school - including CLIL on 2nd level , eventually School Educational Programme change. After the project the teachers will further develop the acquired knowledge and skills in practice. Our aim is creating materials for teaching CLIL on 2nd level. They will be elaborated exactly according to our requirements and needs to fully meet the level of language proficiency of our students. This will enable long-term benefits for the school.
