Youth Bridging the Gap: Let's See Beyond Our Gender and Cultural Glasses
Start date: May 1, 2012,

Our application is made in the name of the Reykjavík chapter of AFS Iceland (AFS á Íslandi; Aðþjóðleg Fræðsla og Samskipti) and volunteers from this chapter will carry out the project. The project will not, however, be directly affiliated with AFS but be a platform for AFS volunteers to gain knowledge and competence in the field of gender and culture through working and discoursing with AFS volunteers from the other participating countries.AFS Iceland is a non-governmental, non-profit, voluntary organization that through educational-youth-exchanges promotes intercultural learning and understanding. AFS is a peace organization and it is the belief of the organization that by increasing knowledge, understanding and awareness of different cultures through non-formal education we take important steps towards a more tolerant, just and peaceful world. AFS encourages respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without distinction as to race, sex, language, religion or social status. The majority (if not all) of the volunteers who will participate in the project have been exchange students in different countries and are now active volunteers in AFS. The volunteers organize and implement different events, orientations and trainings for AFS Iceland. Most of them belong to the Reykjavík Chapter (which consequently is the largest AFS Chapter in Iceland) and some of their usual activities include preparing students for their exchange year abroad, helping them re-enter the Icelandic culture after their exchange, different educational and recreational activities with foreign exchange students in Iceland and improving the volunteer-work by attending, and facilitating, trainings on Global- and intercultural learning and other issues connected with the AFS mission. All activities are based on the core AFS values of dignity, respect for differences, harmony, sensitivity and tolerance. The field covered by the project Youth Bridging the Gap: Seeing Beyond Our Gender and Cultural Glasses ties neatly in with the focus of AFS as we will be inviting participants to take of their gender and cultural glasses when looking at European society in order to establish a joint view and a shared feeling of responsibility, thus strengthening our common identity.
