YouPEC 2008: a Youth Perspective on sustainable Consumption
Start date: May 1, 2008,

YouPEC 2008 has the ambition to bring 150 youths together from 30 European countries to develop a sparkling and innovative vision on what a sustainable society should be like and to how get there. This "Youth Perspective" should inspire national and European governments and create support among Dutch and other European citizens for a sustainable society. JMA (Young Friends of the Earth Netherlands) wants to organise a European Youth conference on sustainable consumption. This conference is a sequel to YouPEC 2007 (Youth Perspective on Energy and Climate) held in Berlin last June. All the participants where very enthusiastic about YouPEC. In the Netherlands this resulted in a meeting with Minister Cramer of Environment Augustus 23. She has seen the European youth declaration from this conference and invited us to write a project proposal for a sequel held in the Netherlands in 2008. We choose for the theme of sustainable consumption for several reasons. First the 3 'P of sustainability (people , planet, profit) can be well applied here. Second it is a very recognizable theme for youths on a practical level, but it can also be strongly influence by the EU and national government through innovation and environmental policies and laws. The program of YouPEC 2008 will consist of workshops and sessions on energy, food and other consumer goods. Besides giving information there will be a capacity building program to support youths in campaigning (fundraising, project planning, PR, volunteering work etc), open space workshops to develop campaigns and strengthen co-operation between countries and discussion groups to develop the Youth Declaration.
