Young Europeans' Solidarity
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Oct 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Set in Istria, a multicultural and bilingual region, at the border with Slovenia and few Km further away from the Italian border, the Local Democracy Agency during its life have had a key role in the development of democratic practices in Croatia, in strenghtening the transborder cooperation, thanks to its international nature, in safeguarding human and minority rights and in increasing the social awareness and the public relevance of youth. After many years of successful and effective adhesion to the European programmes, it has been the sixth year we've applied the EVS project, an evidence and a guarantee of the long-lasting experience of the Agency in the field of youth. The project Y.E.S. (Young Europeans' Solidarity) is the next step in LDA's life, particularly relevant for the historical context in wich it takes place: the entrance of Croatia in the EU's family. The project is based on three pillars: fostering the social dialogue and understanding among different ethnic, cultural, linguistic groups; improving the quality of the youth policy and increasing young people's possibilities of partecipating and working; spreading awareness about EU and democracy and strenghtening the concept of European citizenship over civil society. Other relevant themes and aims of the project are gender equality, equal opportunities, international cooperation, cooperation development, and languages learning. The learning dimension of the volunteers is one of the main objectives, present in all the other ones listed above and pursued through them. It's not required of the volunteers to have specific skills, but solid and strong motivations, to be in the age for the EVS, to be legally residing in a Programme Country or in a Neighboring Partner Country and they have to be interested in our programme and activities. In the recruitment we have a particular regard for young people with fewer opportunities and we assure gender equality among our volunteers. The volunteers carry on many activities during their service: they partecipate to the Agency's regional, national and international projects, they work in local institutions, organisations and schools, they organise events, meetings, conferences, workshops, with spaces for creativity, suggestions and the development of their own ideas. Everithing is fulfilled with the coordination and overview of the LDA, the aid of its staff, in cooperation with other public and private actors and in contact with the civil society. The expected impact on the volunteers and over local communities is a mayor awareness of the European Citizenship concept, obtained by stressing European founding principles, the positive follow-ups of the integration and enlargement process, the relevance of an active citizenship and enlightening the several opportunities that are there to be taken ; the volunteers should gain also tools, skills and competences that can result crucial in their future lives, jobs and tasks. Other important results can be achieved by the involvement of other actors that may multiply the effects: young people, associations, media, political leaders, opinion leaders, EU decision makers. The local communities, thanks to the project, have the opportunity to build capacities and develop their networks in Europe. The international nature of the Agency is an important feature to expand the range of the results. All these results acquire a more relevant dimension, if analized in the long period, and this is the reason we keep on applying the EVS and we keep on building the EU.
