Young European People in the UNESCO year of World Heritage
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Feb 28, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The idea of the project was to bring European young people in touch with the idea of the Río-Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) using the example of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park in Thüringen/ Germany and the Rodna Mountain National Park (Biosphere Reserve) from Romania to put this in an European Context of Conservation of Biological Diversity, Sustainable use of the Natural Resources, Local Benefit of the sustainable use, having in mind that 2014 is the year of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both protected areas where the youngsters come from are declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites for Nature (Hainich Forest and Pietrosu Mare - part of the Rodna Mountains National Park which is on Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites). Having a strong cooperation, both organisations developped this project which is focused on the following objectives: 1. Celebrating the year of UNESCO World Heritage Sites by organising a youth exchange between 35 youngsters from Germany and Romania in the Eischfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park during 10 days. 2. Promoting the year of UNESCO World Heritage Sites using mass-media campaign and disseminating the project results on a period of 7 months. The project is focusing on promoting the importance of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as model of nature conservation and protected areas very used for tourism and biodiversity protection. The Romanian partner is only on Tentative List of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and need to learn from German experience how to continue the process for becoming a real World Heritage Site for Nature. The concept of UNESCO World Heritage Site for Nature is not known in Romania, most of the people are knowing about the World Heritage Sites for Culture (ex. wooden churches or the monasteries of Bucovina) and there is a vital need to promote and increase the public awareness about this topic very important for nature conservation.
