Young Civic Radio - Europe

Our consortium has worked together to design a multilingual European young people’sradio or podcasting project for language learning based on the didactic concept of‘language awareness’ (multilingualism within the context of the European dimension),and will be implementing this with the help of support from the EU’s Lifelong LearningProgramme (LLP) (cross-section programme KA2 “Languages - multilateral projects”).One particular innovation, as well as using the latest information and communicationtechnologies (ICT – podcasting, weblogs, forums, Internet telephony), is the applicationof the latest findings in the area of brain research (neurolinguistic and neurodidactic) toforeign-language learning (known as brain-compatible language learning). With its focuson European Citizenship Education, the project also supports the EuropeanCommission’s “Plan D”. The core group consists of five project partners from variouscountries within Europe, mainly from the formal and informal youth and adult educationsector. The reciprocal exchange of ideas and content should enable those involved toproduce educational and entertaining audio and video contributions in a range ofEuropean languages (German, English, Norwegian, Romanian and Hungarian). Theproject coordinators are also using academically based methods for up-to-date, activitybasedand autonomous learning. The contributions produced in the individualsubprojects are adapted to suit the age and target group and are made available free ofcharge to all Internet users. The audio and video contributions made are also broadcastby independent radio and TV stations. The educational contributions can also be usedby people teaching and learning foreign languages throughout Europe. With this project,we are striving for a widespread distribution of effective language teaching methodstargeted at the appropriate intellectual level. All participants are also introduced to usinga wide range of ICT and generally receive motivational support for language learningand LLL. Pan-European co-operation and communication should also result in andsupport the awareness of all stakeholders of European Citizenship (“European PublicSphere”).Our project is also closely linked to the requirements for the PISA study in the area offoreign language skills, scheduled for 2009.
