Young Baltic Narratives (YO! BaNa)
Start date: Mar 31, 2010, End date: Nov 30, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

YO! BaNa springs from the network Screenit! that was initiated in 2008 by organizations working with film for children and young people around the Baltic Sea. The project is aiming to improve the film making and film screening possibilities for children and young people in their spare time and in school. The action plan is divided into three WP, the firts wp for management and the second two for the content, approaching the issues from different directions. Young Narratives focuses on children and youth in order to inspire and get started the creative processes. This will be done through arranging activities (workshops, tutoring, film festivals and joint film camps) where the participants will enter deeply into their own culture and then share their film narratives between the islands and each other – Seeking the Souls of the Skerries and Islands. Media Literacy focuses on people who, within the scope of their regular duties, will support and guide children and young people in their film activities. For these categories – teachers, recreational pedagogues and people working in associations and non-governmental organizations – two joint seminars, tutoring and individual media literacy guidance will be arranged. By means of border-crossing co-operation the project seeks to find a larger context and a fellowship that inspires and encourages young people to experiment and improve their ability in the field of moving images. The intention is also to set up a plan for joint film festivals that henceforth will attract young people to the field of film. These steps are meant to improve the living conditions of children and young people living on the islands, make them part of the social structure, strengthen the affinity and identity as inhabitants of the archipelago, which will make them proud of their origin and inclined to stay in the archipelago also as adults. The participating partners have planned the project together and will proceed planning the implementation and dissemination in co-operation with the target groups during the project period. Achievements: The Yo!BaNa project created and supported filmmaking and film-screening opportunities for children and young people in school and in their spare time. With filmmaking, the intention of the project was to make the children and young people living on the islands part of the general social structure, strengthening their affinity and identity as inhabitants of the archipelago. This will help to make them proud of their roots and more inclined to stay on the archipelago as adults. The project created a plan for a joint film festival to attract young people to the field of film. Other activities arranged by the project were workshops and tutoring. Additionally, the project arranged joint film camps where participants were able to share their film narratives between the islands and with each other.
