Young Artists in Action
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Mar 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Youth civil and social participation has been considered an essential component for the formulation of european policies even if, nowadays, young people relationship towards society is troubled and problematic. Taking into consideration that european countries are part of a synergistic global community, societies have shown their commitment to considerate not only local youth needs but a wider range of requests made by foreign people forced to emigrate to Europe in order to facilitate the integration between different cultures. These facts originate the desire to stimulate young people with different needs, values and backgrounds to speak out on their local issues and interests particularly regarding the society and, in general, the global community they live in. Life and Life Organization in collaboration with Carrefour Association have identified in art-based programs, contemplated as a non-formal education approaches, the most efficent tool to achieve this challenging objective. The "Young Artists in Action" project seeks to raise youth awareness and increase their participation in society through artistic expressions; fundamentally, we want to motivate youth and individuals with fewer opportunities and/or belonging to other social, cultural, economic contexts to contribute with a more active participation in the community. In fact, the volunteer will be constantly in contact with at-risk individuals and marginalized groups hosted in the Social Integration and Hosting Center, which is part of the Carrefour Association, identified as main target group of his/her artistic project. Consequently, the project allows youngesters to discover the importance of arts in the creation of an intercultural dialogue which is considered as a mean to strengthen identity and social cohesion while its international and multicultural features provide the volunteer with a set of opportunities to develop essential job skills and abilities in respecting interlocutor's culture and values system. The volunteer will be in charge to implement a project based in visual arts, music, performing arts, design, crafts and other forms of artistic expression through which promoting a social and humanitarian cause in order to involve both young local people and Association's residents in the Social Integration and Hosting Center ((at-risk youth, ethnic minorities, people in a poor neighborhood). Meanwhile, the volunteer takes part to various activities such as the organization of European thematic weeks, implementation of artistic workshops with CHRS residents, interactive meetings or evening spots in the cybercafé with the aim to share different culture's habits (food, values, traditions, language, country of origin etc). Furthermore, the volunteer will organize some interventions in schools, libraries and other public institutions in order to disseminate the on-going project experience and, in the meanwhile, to involve these public entities with a social purpose in the mobilization of youth for a stronger social and civil engagement. At the end of the EVS, we expect the volunteer shows not only an higher commitment in social and humanitarian causes by attending studies about these subjects and taking part to local initiatives, Ngos and asssociations (more precisely in Italy and abroad), but a strong capacity to understand multicultural perspectives, as well as encourage and listen to people' perspectives of diversity. Also, the EVS project seeks to enhance key labour skills especially communication abilities in relation with multicultural and international contexts, particularly required in almost every working environment, allowing the participant to enter easily in the job market. The volunteer will acquire a deeper insight and knowledge in every artistic subjects that instead, he/she could never have the opportunity to do in the origin country. The intervention will have a positive impact on the participanting Organizations as well which means an enhancement of their capacity to cooperate and collaborate with foreign partners and to coordinate an european project concerning the management of volunteering activities abroad.Since community arts programs are said to build social capital by boosting individuals’ ability and motivation to be civically engaged, we expect a deeper comprehension of the role of art in the institutional bodies and the community (in Italy and France), in making community more appealing and improving its image and consequently, attracting more people from other country and increasing visibility and turism. In coclusion, with this project we pursue as long term achievements, an increasement of the level of tollerance towards cultural differences through the promotion of cultural diversity’s benefits which will be underlined and spreaded along the dissemination phase and an higher attendance of youth in Universities in social and humanitarian studies.
