YE - Youth Political Participation
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project will take place in Øvre Eiker, Norway and Campdevanol in Spain. The main idea of the project is to connect youth from Norway and Spain under the topic of tolerance, democratic proses, acquire konwledge about the EU, inter-cultural learning/understanding, solidarity and integration. There will be 30 participants and 6 leaders. The activities will be outdoor activities, team building activities, skiing etc. There will be work-shops with a topic youth democracy, led by extternal professionals. Through the activities planned we will teach about tolerance, language, interaction, learning more about the culture and become aware of their European citizenship. Øvre Eiker has for many years wanted our young people to achieve good attitudes, useful skills, relevant knowledge and understanding of the concepts tolerance, solidarity and democracy. Our community has experienced having groups of youngsters with Nazi and racist attitudes. As a reaction to these forces, which were beginning to permeate parts of the youth group, a popular movement, called Øvre Eiker Viser Ansikt (Øvre Eiker “show their face”) was formed. This movement has also ensured that all pupils in our schools, in the 9th grade, have got the opportunity to attand “tolerance travels” to Poland and Germany, to visit the concentration camps of World War 2. In addition, the schools have developed their own training programs, where tolerance and racism have been the main content. The later years of experience with a lot of turmoil in both Europe and Africa, which has created an influx of immigrants and refugees, has also led to expanded needs in this education. European awareness, challenges related to integration, the need for inter-cultural learning and youth policy, both specifically and in general, are themes that they are working more and more with, both in schools and in the community as a whole.A newly created youth council in Øvre Eiker, consisting of youths from all municipal areas and schools, represent all the young people in the municipality, and they are expected to be opinion carriers into the municipality's local political government. These 13 young people need education and experience. Through an exchange with a municipality in another European country, and in this case an EU country, we hope to achieve much of what we have planned. For youngsters from the partner country, the same premise for the desired effect of the exchange is expected.Through joint activities, group work, lectures and excursions, participants from the two countries will get to know and learn from each other. Contracted lecturers with knowledge of the issues and experiences working with young people, will help us to provide participants experiences that we want them to achieve. Interaction and communication will be the main activities throughout the whole exchange.Participants will be aged 15-17, and they will all be students, either in secondary school or high school. The youth who participate, will in the aftermath of the exchanges be commissioned to share their experiences from the meetings with the partner municipality. We hope their experiences and learning outcome will give them inspiration in their work as representatives in the municipal youth council, and that they will continue to improve their work with youth democracy. Political consciousness is something that our municipal leaders want the youth to possess to a greater extent. We believe that this exchange can help doing that. A changing Europe means that the need for political participation becomes even more important in the future, not least among those who represent the future - namely the young.
