YALA: Your Active Life in Aveiro
Start date: Jan 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

YALA! ("Your Active Life in Aveiro") was a long term EVS project that happened in Aveiro during 2015. The project started in January, and the service itself in February 2015. We hosted 4 volunteers, from 3 different countries (Poland, Croatia and Latvia) in Aveiro, in Agora Aveiro - association for the promotion of active citizenship. Some of the main objectives of our association is helping creation of more active community and raising awareness of some important social issues. This also was the main task of our volunteers during seven months of their service. They supported local activities of Agora Aveiro, helped with organisation of already scheduled activities (workshops, guerrilla actions, etc), and proposed their own ideas and managed their own projects with the help of our local volunteers. Some of the ideas they had turned into Agora Aveiro's regular activities. This way they made bigger impact on the local community of Aveiro. Some of the undertaken activities were Projeto Valentino (spreading positive messages), Clothes Swap party, one afternoon country presentation in local nursing home, two pre-departure trainings for other EVS volunteers, Human Library, International Day of Smiles action, "If you need it, then take it!" action (sharing clothes to those in need), EVS presentation in youth center "Casa de juventude". Volunteers also participated in some regular activities of Agora Aveiro, so they were involved in the whole process of organisation of Wave2 youth exchange that happened in the end of June 2015, and they joined the crew of TEDxAveiro volunteers and participated in preparation of big TEDx conference that happens annually in Aveiro. They also worked on designing and maintaining organisational website and social media profiles, they created Agora Aveiro and EVS flyers, two brochures and made several videos to document their activities. Within all this, they learned about Erasmus+ as well as about work of an NGO. During their learning process, volunteers were using non-formal and informal methodologies. They participated in workshops, round tables, worked in pairs and groups, and also, they were learning and gaining new competences simply thanks to the fact that they were living abroad. This project had a strong intercultural component, since Agora Aveiro organizes regularly informal meetings and gatherings of people from all over the world who are living in Aveiro.
