WRG - bilingual und willkommen
Start date: Jul 23, 2016, End date: Jul 22, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

At the Walther Rathenau grammar school in Berlin-Grunewald, the subjects Biology and Geography have partly been taught in English in 7th and 8th grade since 2014/15. For 2016/17 an application has been made to set up a bilingual class. Furthermore, other non-German-speaking children from European countries and refugees have been taught in special classes since 2012. Due to the establishment of the bilingual class and more refugees in the future teachers of both departments need teacher training concerning English and teaching methods. By participating in the CLIL training the teachers can improve their English language skills to teach their subjects in English.Furthermore, they expect to learn about appropriate material and how to adapt existing material to bilingual education. They think that the exchange of experiences with participants from other European countries will be very useful and eventually lead to new international contacts. The three teachers applying for the programme are in charge of the school’s departments of Chemistry, Biology and Geography. They also have experience in teaching refugees, including being class teachers. The participants will pass on their knowledge and skills in team meetings at the beginning of the next term. They intend to give their colleagues the opportunity to attend their classes and to find other participants for the next training. Moreover they will prepare criteria of evaluation and implement these. The participants are expected to improve their language skills and motivating teaching skills and to benefit from new cultural insight in their classes to promote the project at school.
