Work Experience Programme
Start date: Sep 8, 2014, End date: Sep 8, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project intends to enable 24 students of a secondary VET college in Wels to broaden their personal, educational as well as professional experience by spending three weeks in London. The stay is divided into two parts: during the first week the participating students are going to attend a preparatory language & culture course which should help them overcome linguistic difficulties and make them feel more comfortable in a new culture and environment. The second and third week is set out to enrich the participants’ work experience at a London based company. By being accommodated in a host family, the desired linguistic and cultural output of the project should be further strengthened. The most obvious and also important objective of this project is allowing the participating students to use their acquired language skills in an “authentic” environment, thus guaranteeing enhancement in terms of language control. Further, intercultural awareness and international mobility will be promoted, social and personal skills strengthened and the participants will get a unique chance to establish first international contacts which might prove helpful in their future as working professionals. The successful realization of this project will also have a considerable impact on students’ attitude towards foreign language acquisition and the reputation of our school as a progressive educational institution. Specific measures to inform non-participating students and teachers as well as the local community and industry about the project, its importance and success will be taken. The 24 selected participants are currently attending the third grade of the Chemistry department of a secondary VET college in Wels, Austria. All participants have been studying English for at least seven years and are highly motivated and open-minded students who are excited to learn and experience new things in life. They regard this project as an “adventure” and we are convinced that it will further motivate and show them that there are almost endless possibilities for (intercultural) learning and personal development, which are only waiting to be explored.
