Work experience in London
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school has partaken in international exchanges for the past ten years. However, it has been the theoretical programmes such as civics and science who have been able to benefit from these cultural exchanges. Focus has been on entrepreneurship, science, language and inclusion. The vocational programmes have not been able to partake for two reasons; one, many vocational student study english but no other foreign language. Two; they have 15 weeks workplacement over three years and if the exchange has been during the work placemnet period these students have been excluded as they require 15 weeks work placemnet to be able to graduate. All students should be given the same opportunity but our school has not been able to find the right project for thie when it comes to our vocational students. Being able to offer them workplacement abroad would be fantastic. The students are 25 upper secondary students in their second and third year, studying either Health and Social Care or Retail and administration. Work experience is compulsory on these programmes over the three years.By working with ADC college our school could have an international profile that benefits allt the students. If our vocational students could have two weeks work experience in London they would be able to broaden their horizons, feel a sense of pride when it comes to their chosen career, see that work can be in Sweden or abroad and get a better understanding for cultural differences and likeness as wel as improve their language skills. Many of the criteria in our courses have an international angle and it is difficult as a teacher to bring these to life purely by theory. To date we have struggled to find a project that truly links in with the vocational programmes we offer. An international exchanges in partnership with ADC college and their work placement programme would mean that every student at Akademi Båstad gymnasium has a chance to experience life abroad, improve their language skills and open up their minds to the fact that we are all one large community and work does not necessarily have to be in your country of birth. They will learn new skills and grow on a personal level, helping to create responsible citizen, succesfull learners and confident individuals. Furthermore it would increase their understanding of the possibilities of what a EU membership means to them as citizens and that the we are part of a large international community where diversity is key to success. On a local level it may help to increase student motivation on our two vocational programmes as a pass on work experience and national english test would be required to be able to partake in the programme. Our students would be able to apply for this experience, providing they have passed the above mentioned criteria. As a school we focus on entrepreneurship, internationalisation and inclusion. By offering this work placement in London all students at Akademi Båstad gymnasium would be given the same opportunity when it comes to partaking in an international exchange. Entrepreneurship and inclusion would be an integral part of the project as help us embedd these values further at our school. The health and retail industry are an important part not only of the Swedish economy but also the European community. By enhancing our programmes with this work experience abroad we believe that this will attract more students to the programmes and the long term benefit would be qualified and motivated students ready to join the proffessions, health and retail.
