Project background and project goals The projects goal is to get to know concepts of the early language development in other European institutions. Especially here in Vienna, the proportion of children with another mother tongue than German in children day nurseries is really high. Furthermore, the language deficits are also rising by kids with German as their first language. Thus, there are new requirements to the job profile of kindergarten teachers. The early language development is an important step for the individual development of our children. Therefore, it is important that they have the correct knowledge of language since this is a central competence for a succesful education as well as an accomplished integration into society. The participation in project enables the future kindergarten teacher to gain experience. What is more, it will also be able to make comparisons in the field of early language development and oft he partner organisations. The support and improvement of competences is the most imporant concern of pedagogical work in the kindergarten because this is what children need in order to find their paths in this world and learn how to deal with their environment. The concious stimulation of the learning process supports the stabilisation and establishment of the childhood development and skills as well as the full exploitation of their individual possibilities. Although the age of the children is the same in different institutions within and outside a countries’ boundaries, a closer look to Europe, especially to Belgium and Finland, helps to find their similarities and differences. The students get an insight into the educational work of different international elementary education institutions and a chance to understand the definition of life-long learning. Number and profile of the participants: 16 students, who are currently in the 4th year of our school can participate in the project. They work in selected childcare centres for three weeks.
