Widening the bridges on main road 89 between motorway 5 and Vartius, phase II
Start date: Apr 17, 2005, End date: Oct 30, 2006 PROJECT  FINISHED

Widening the road bridges on main road 89 from Paltamo to Vartius was started in the Widening the bridges on main road 89 between motorway 5 and Vartius project. Once the plans were completed in more detail, the projects actual funding need proved to be greater than the obtained funding; therefore, a project application was submitted and funding consequently received for the project. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Road Administration. Achievements: The bridges were widened as planned and the contract award meeting was held on Nov 14, 2006. The bridges and bridge embankments on main road 89 were widened to nine/seven metres diameter, making the usable width of the bridge nine-and-a-half metres, thus fulfilling the requirements set for national roads. The widening of the bridges and both bridge embankments was partially completed by renewing and repairing old structures. The bridge embankments were widened and the embankment railings were renewed where necessary. In order to improve the capacity and traffic safety of the national road between Motorway 5 and the Vartius border station, it was seen as necessary in the future to widen the cross-section of the road to the paved width of the widened bridges.
