Welcome for internationals III: Connecting Students, Connecting Worlds
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The EVS project "Welcome for internationals III: Connecting Students, Connecting Worlds" is implemented under the EU program "Erasmus+: Youth in Action" for the period from August 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017 with activities in the period from September 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. The project involves one volunteer - a Romanian girl Diana Moraru. It is hosted and coordinated by “Latvijas Kristīgā Studentu Brālība” (Latvian Christian Student Fellowship) - LKSB, Riga, Latvia (PIC 944926083), but the sending organization is “Chance for Life”, Bucharest, Romania (946713114).The aim of the project is to create an environment that helps the international students in six Latvian cities, Liepāja, Ventspils, Jelgava, Valmiera, Rēzekne and Daugavpils, where the regional universities are operating, to create a connection with the local society, particularly - the local students. This can be done by providing volunteer a chance to be in the staff worker team of the organisation, to represent the interests of international students; joining the international team to work together for a common goal; organising events where incoming students would feel free to express themselves and understand other cultures, worldviews and people; increasing local student curiosity about other cultures and helping the volunteer herself to integrate and develop different competences. The project idea came about because the LKSB has already been hosting one EVS volunteer who has been working with international students and decided to make a next project especially for the regional universities to continue this work and improve it, by involving local students of all the six regional universities and helping them overcome their language and cultural barriers toward the foreigners.Project activities will focus on offer different kinds of support to international students, to help them “feel like home” in Latvia. For example, the volunteer together with local and foreign students will organise different city orientation activities, cultural events, workshops, lead discussion groups related to exploring Christian faith and other topics.Volunteer will also participate in student weekend events, trainings, seminars, where most of participants are Latvian students. She will involve international students in those activities, as well as present EVS and her culture, breaking barriers between local and international students. It is intended that as a result to this project the volunteer will have a wider vision of multicultural diversity, that LKSB will feel more capable to focus on work with internationals, accept different cultures and promote their mutual connection which is not less essential in regions than in Riga, that local Latvian students would become more open to interact with the foreign students all around Latvia, and also the international students would better understand other countries and cultures and feel more comfortable to be in a foreign environment.
