Web-based Maritime English Language Learning Tool

Given that English is the dominant language in the maritime field and having identified the absence of dedicated English-language training material for maritime students/professionals and teachers, the project will produce a web-based, English-language learning tool for this sector. The tool will be a 'virtual ship', which takes the user on a voyage and in the process, goes through the various stages of a 'typical' journey from port to port, including emergency procedures. The language will range from ‘intermediate’ through to ‘advanced’ level and will be aimed at a range of users from university students through to professionals (officers) working for shipping companies. The 'Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping' Convention by the International Maritime Organisation will be taken into account when devising language content. The project partners (16 partners from 6 countries) will create the virtual ship and launch this via the web, whereupon access to the learning tool will be free, although users will be required to register. The virtual ship will create a 'storyline' and will present material as text, exercises, images, sound and video clips, with certain material available in digital and PDF format. The material content for the virtual ship's storyline will be identified by surveying the needs of ship's officers for adequate on-the-job performance. The material will be tested and evaluated through pilot courses, self-study and document assessment by potential end-users, with any necessary adjustment undertaken following feedback from the pilot phase. The end product, the ‘MarEng’ learning tool, will be linked to the websites of partner organisations which will play a strong role in its’ dissemination. At the project's end, a final conference/marketing event will be held.
