WATER “SHAPES” - Meanings, uses and the architectural works of the most precious gift
Start date: Oct 1, 2010,

Climate change and the growing scarcity of water in our part of the world make it increasingly urgent to reflect on the fundamental role of water sources, all the more so in Euro-Mediterranean countries, where historical identity is based on a constant relation with water. To focus on the importance of water, not only concerning its use but also the connected cultural and artistic significance, is therefore our fundamental aim. The project's originality lies in its definition of water as a cultural asset, to be preserved and enhanced in its multiple aspects, from the symbology to which it is associated to traditional uses, from settlement modes it is has influenced to the architecture inspired by the daily need for its exploitation.Six partners from the Euro-Mediterranean region - Italy, Spain, Portugal and France - aim to make a contribution with regard to the cultural and material "forms" that water takes in their respective countries, identifying and analysing the most characteristic and representative examples selected over a period of time ranging from Antiquity to the pre-industrial era. By identifying general thematic categories, enriched by the content of field research carried out by the various partners, the aim is to: - create a systematic approach to information (spread through workshops, seminars and the publication o a thematic archive online) - preserve and enhance tangible and intangible assets connected to water (by creating touring itineraries, Virtual Tours, photograph exhibitions and artistic performances on the theme of water)- create and stimulate awareness at European and extra-European level of the need to preserve and enhance these tangible and intangible assets connected to water using the above-mentioned tools.
