Vzděláváme se pro budoucnost GTM
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

2. Summary of the Project Gymnázium Thomase Manna (Thomas Mann High School) is a general secondary school which provides some courses in the German language having a higher number of German courses. We aim to encourage our students to the DSD II Examination, the successful pass of which enables the students to study at German Universities. On the basis of the permission of the Ministry of Education and Physical Training, we may give some lessons in German language. Our aim has been to enlarge the German language also to further subjects, namely in form of the method CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). For the fulfilment of this aim, it was necessary to improve language skill in the teacher of non-language subjects and simultaneously to increase the awareness of this method among the German language teachers, because without their mutual cooperation the CLIL implementation would not be realizable. At our school, we have appointed a methodologist as a responsible consultant for a graduate implementation of CLIL to individual subjects. The involved teachers educated themselves both in courses in the Czech Republic and especially during 15 mobile observations in Germany and Austria. These mobile observations were individually planned according to the participants´ initial level of knowledge of German and subject orientation. Thanks to our contacts abroad, we were successful in realizing, together with the mobile courses, the observations of our teachers in German schools which were very valuable and inspiring for their subsequent teaching at GTM. After the first year of the project, the supplement of our school education program was created consisting in the official implementation of the method CLIL to the educational system in our school, namely in the following subjects: OSZ (CSSF - Civil and Social Science Fundamentals), informatics, mathematics and physics. In the second year of the project, we succeeded in continuing to enlarge knowledge of teachers in the German language and therefore, we are able to implement the CLIL method to the art lessons, geography and natural history as well. Especially in the subject of CSSF, the CLIL method has already further positive impact on the creation of good Czech-German relations which had been also a partial aim of our project. The project directly involved qualified teachers of our school as well as non-pedagogical employees. Other colleagues took part in the project in form of internal workshops in which the teachers transmitted their experience from mobile observations and courses. The teachers improved their knowledge always at least by one level (i.e. from the level B2 to C1 etc.) and obtained many materials for specific use in their lessons (working sheets, thematic handbooks, German textbooks, references to videos, interactive and online materials). They have their progress documented in their professional portfolio which has been implemented in our teachers since the school year 2014/2015. In spite of the fact that the project was officially terminated, we have established a good cooperation with German partner schools which enables us to continually acquire further inspiration to our classes and thanks to personal relations with German teachers it gives us possibility of consultations and personal collegial support. We plan to further enlarge the German language providing thereby an exceptional possibility of the education in the Czech-German milieu of our school.
