Volunteering to promote Solidarity Between Generations
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Europe is facing a challenge due to demographic changes. Increases in longevity and continuing low birth rates are causing a shift in the ratio of old and young, and as a result the proportion of older people is rising. Our entire society needs to adapt itself to the needs of its ageing population, but it will also have to tackle the new challenges faced by other age groups so that all generations will be able to continue supporting each other and living together peacefully.Starting from this context, “Volunteering to promote solidarity between generations” is an EVS project promoting intergenerational dialogue, social inclusion of elderly people cultural diversity and youth participation. It will involve two young people coming from The Netherlands and Armenia in volunteering for 12 months in a hosting organization called Rifugio Re Carlo Alberto. The centre, based in Luserna San Giovanni (a small town near Turin) hosts several elderly people with variable degrees of self-sufficiency and people suffering from the Alzheimer disease. There, the volunteers will have a supporting role of the local staff, as creative resource, in the daily activities carried out. Those activities will range from the ones of supporting the social workers in organizing and performing recreational initiatives for the elderly to the ones of establishing relations with people living in the residential centre. Concerning volunteers profile, the 2 youngsters who are going to be selected will be unemployed. They will be chosen for their motivations and aptitudes to self-commitment rather than for their educational, professional or linguistic background. Thanks to this experience, they will get a precious chance of acquiring specific personal and professional skills to deal with an important social inclusion issue which might be professionally constructive for a future work or a training opportunity in the social sector. In this way, this project becomes a way to promote youth employment as well. This project will provide practice based methods which will enable the volunteers to have hands-on experience. Volunteers will be mentored and supported in planning and executing their cultural dialogue and for their intercultural skills development. They will also receive at the end of their experience a Youthpass certificate as an added value tool to their CVs.In the framework of this project, AFSAI and all partners have planned and agreed on a specific working method strategy, with roles, responsibilities and a timetable, regarding each phase of the project: project drafting phase, volunteers selections, volunteers and host organization’s preparation, Evs activity implementation (monitoring and support), Evs activity closure, project evaluation and follow up. The expected results of the project are mainly linked to the partnership empowerment among the organizations involved, to the enrichment of the benefits of the people in the hosting organizations as well as the improvement of the local community’s intercultural awareness and above all to the growth of the volunteers. AFSAI, as coordinating organization, will make sure that a good, fruitful and effective cooperation and communication will be kept during the whole project in order to lay down foundations for a future cooperation in the framework of the new Erasmus Plus Programme.
