Volunteering & Special Education - Learning Something Special!
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

This EVS project will be implemented in two Finnish special education institutes, Validia Ammattiopisto and Lehtimäen opisto, which provide educational programs, courses and support for people with special needs. There will be 2 volunteers for each host organisation, so this project will enable EVS experience for 4 young people, of which 3 can be considered as with fewer opportunities (unemployment, economic and social obstacles). The volunteers to Validia come from Turkey and France and to Lehtimäki from Spain and Armenia. The length of activity period is 10 months, from August 2016 until June 2017. The volunteers will bring an intercultural learning element to the everyday life of students with special needs by assisting them in their daily study activities and organising free-time activities for the students. The most important objective of this project is to bring these people together for 10 month cooperation projects and thus enable the nonformal, intercultural learning experience. The EVS volunteers will have a unique opportunity to learn about Finnish special education system and the realities of disabled people in the Finnish society. The students will gain international experiences at their own home campus, widen their cultural perspectives and practise their language skills. People with special needs do not always have equal opportunities to gain international experience and this project is a tool to support and encourage them in this process. In the long run, we hope to see that this kind of cooperation will increase intercultural understanding and awareness of the rights of disabled people in different European countries.
