Volunteer wanted!
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jan 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Kärdla Open Youth Centre (Hiiumaa Youth Work Centre since 2015) hosted an Italian volunteer Maurizio since 1st of September 2014 and Emmaste Open Youth Centre (Emmaste Leisure Centre since 2016, document in annex) hosted a volunteer, Peter, from Slovakkia. Peter and Maurizio were both very cheerful and friendly volunteers, who brought lots of additional values to youth centres. The aim of the project was to improve youngster's key competences (communication in foreign languages, learning to learn, social and civic competences, cultural awareness and expression) and provide innovative and interesting activities. Thereby, it was important to provide self-development opportunities through the same key competences for volunteers as well. Volunteers had tasks to carry out interest activity for youngsters, introduce their language and culture and help to organize youth centre's events. Maurizio had a chance to be involved in project writing and organization. Peter had also a chance to be involved in project writing, he wrote an English prat of a project by Emmaste Open Youth Centre. There were regular meetings in Kärdla Open Youth Centre between the volunteer and mentor. There was a mentor appointed for Peter in Emmaste but his needs were a little bit different and he got all the support he needed from Emmaste youth centre. Both of the volunteers got experience from different youth work areas. They learnt responsibility, experienced leader role, got organisational knowledge and experience of being part of the project. Volunteers learnt new things about themselves, they became more independent, better decision-makers and more self-conscious, they coped with Estonian cultural space successfully and learnt skills about teaching. Youth learnt tolerance, peculiarity of different cultures and their spare time was fulfilled. Youth found themselves a friend in volunteers and they knew that someone was always there for them. Youth also became more aware of open boarders, different opportunities how to go to abroad and they became more open and tolerant towards other culture. Every party of this project was forced to come out of their comfort zone, be more flexible and challenge themselves.
