Volunteer Studio - Tarlungeni Open Space Project
Start date: Mar 1, 2011,

The project is a Trans-national Youth Initiative between students at the University of Sheffield, UK and FAST (Fundatia pentru Asistenta Sociala si Tineret), Romania. The 8.5 month project involving 8 participants from the UK and 20 participants from Romania will develop community recreational facilities in the marginalised Roma settlement of Tarlungeni village, Brasov county, Romania. The project aims to support youth participation in community development, tackle environmental poverty and challenge prejudices and discrimination against the Roma community through the creation of these facilities.Young people will lead the development of recreational facilities through a participatory design and decision making process. The experience will empower young people to make decisions locally and get involved in future community development. The facilities will be located on a highly visible site which, despite forming one of few areas of accessible public space in the community, has remained as wasteland. The appropriation of the area will challenge the ghettoisation and environmental poverty of the Roma village. The existing appearance has often endorsed prejudices against the community therefore these improvements will help confront negative perceptions of the Roma. The project will work in cooperation with the Town Hall and members of the non Roma population, generating opportunities for positive cross community experiences.
