Visually impaired youths' empowerment

The "Visually impaired youths' empowerment" /V.I.E.W./ is a project with a duration of 24 months, targeting young people with visual impairment to become youth workers and trainers/motivators of other young people with fewer opportunities. The consortium consists of 2 social enterprise organizations DialogMuseum Frankfurt and International Council for Cultural Centers (I3C) in BG, an institute for the v.i. in Palermo (applicant) and the union of the blind in Cagliari, training and arts organisations in Sardinia (Isogea) and Sicily (Music'Arte), Royal charity enterprise using drama for training of visually impaired youths (UCAN Productions in Wales) and the school for v.i. children in Sofia, BG. The bouquet of partner organizations pocesses specific knowledge and expertise in the field of social inclusion, peer learning, theatre training, youth empowerment applying different methods to combat youth unemployment and social exclusion of young people with fewer opportunities.The key objective of the project is to encourage young people’s active participation in society in general, by designing, testing and implementing tailor-made training sessions and workshops for young people with fewer opportunities from different cultural and social backgrounds, led and moderated by visually impaired youth workers. A methodology, outlining the whole process of training visually impaired young people, who wish to become youth workers will be developed. It will be then complemented by a separate manual (in Braille, large print, digital and audio) to serve as guidelines for blind youth workers to train young people with fewer opportunities. Thus, project partners will create a sophisticated product to address the two main target groups’ needs (blind young people to become youth workers and trainers/motivators of young people with fewer opportunities).The project foresees the following specific interrelated objectives:- develop an innovative training program V.I.E.W., combining the bread-related community building approach, the dialogue in the dark approach and the theatre training VISION program;- develop two manuals - for applying the V.I.E.W. program - one for the staff (youth workers) of NGOs and educational organisations, interested to provide support to youths with fewer opportunities - and another one for the visually impaired youth workers themselves, enabling them to train and motivate other youths with fewer opportunities;- conduct one joint staff training event in Bulgaria;- conduct 1 training of young people with visual impairments to become V.I.E.W. trainers (in Palermo);- organise 5 v.i. youth workers led workshops for youths with fewer opportunities - one in each partner region - for testing the skills acquired through the V.I.E.W. training program.- organise 5 multiplier events in the partner regions, led by V.I.E.W. trainers.Within the project the following tangible results will be produced:1. Training program V.I.E.W.;2. Manual for youth workers to train visually impaired young people as V.I.E.W. trainers;3. Manual for visually impaired youth workers.The developed methodology is expected to:- increase employability opportunities of young people with visual impairments;- support the development of young people centered youth work;- educate a sense of tolerance among young people;- foster active participation in the society of young people;- develop career management skills among young people with fewer opportunities.The project long term results will be to raise the awareness of the society towards the challenges of young visually impaired people. A network of V.I.E.W. supporters will be developed at local and national level to further apply and disseminate the V.I.E.W. methodology.
