Virtual Based Research on New Security in Europe

“New Dimensions of Security in Europe” is an online research seminar taught collaboratively by 4 universities in the Czech Republic, Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland. The motivation it is three-fold:1. To develop and test our model of collaborative teaching and research, using a blended learning approach that combines online learning and collaboration through a learning platform and Web 2.0 tools with milestone physical meetings of students and staff;2.To provide students with the opportunity to experience international research collaboration in the sensitive field of security studies;3. To forge a link between young researchers, policy-making institutions and other non-academic members of the security community.Besides providing excellent research training, another aim of NewSecEU is to produce a web-based network of interaction between academics and practitioners:Students work on contemporary security problems in international teams, analysing one of four dimensions of security: political, military, societal or environmental. The international team structure allows for the comparison and analysis of similarities and differences between the four countries and enhances intercultural dialogue and understanding.By the end of the academic year, students will write a well-researched policy on one of four dimensions of security. These papers will be presented at an international conference in Prague, which will be open to the public and streamed online. The proceedings will be published both online and in paper form. An independent evaluation team from De Montfort University will fully evaluate NewSecEU, both in terms of the overall pedagogical approach and the use of e-learning and Web 2.0 tools. This evaluation will be published on the project website and will be converted into a submission for a scholarly journal. Overall, this project will provide a new model for state-of-the-art trans-European collaboration in course delivery and research training.
