Vineyards of the World Heritage, innovating tourist offers and sustainable development. (VITOUR)

The goal of the VITOUR project is to develop concrete strategies to achieve sustainable development for World Heritage vineyards. Partners aim to improve their management of the landscape in order to increase the international competitiveness of their regions and devise innovative tourist activities to gain access to new sources of revenue. Achievements: Achievements so far The VITOUR network aims to help understand what makes each one of its partners unique. More than ever,'wine is a landscape to taste'.Restoring,protecting and sharing our living cultural landscapes need innovative tools of sustainable development to guarantee our long-term economic vitality.The UNESCO inscription is a commitment to make sure the excellence of the development policies of our stakeholders.We shared our knowledges and best practices in terms of motivating people involved in sustainable landscape management and wine tourism,with original proposals adapted to our respective areas.After 2,5 years of networking with representatives from the local public authorities,wine and tourism professionals,both resources people coming from seven regions and six nationalities we are final results are:A,Two two-day interregional workshops on sustainable landscape management at Boppard(GE) and Saint-Emilion (FR),two two-day workshops on innovative wine tourism offers in Fontevraud(FR) and Cinque Terre(IT),each including a public session devoted to discussions between representatives from local authorities and professionals involved in education and development,as well as site visits.The findings of these working meetings are summarised in the final reports which issue on an innovative set of oenotourism packages and goods practises for a management of heritage vineyard landscapes.B,A Wine and Vine tourism expertise focused on the adaptation of each site to meet the international demand for wine and vine tourism, ended by an orientation development plan for the network. C,To disseminate the results we organised two seminars linked to international wine fairs (March 2006:ProWein–Düsseldorf/June 2007:Vinexpo–Bordeaux),the first one to present the targets of the project,the one second to involve running european projects working on similar topics and funded by INTERREG IIIC.D,The International Declaration of World Heritage Vineyards was adopted by the Steering Committee of VITOUR at Tokaj,in October 2007.E,Sharing tools wer created:a Web Portal(www.vitour.org) linked to the partners' websites and communication supports(press kit, booklet)presents our network.An interregional database linked to the VITOUR extranet gathers the knowledge acquired and actions taken at each site (heritage, landscape, cultural and tourist resources, good practices and development policies implemented).
