VII Encuentro de Jóvenes Sordos/as de Canarias "El diálogo estructurado promueve el cambio"
Start date: Dec 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Deaf youth in the Canary Islands have a lot of barriers in their everyday life that limit or even keep off their participation and social inclusion. It is also added the fact that deaf youth from the smaller islands are in a social disadvantage situation opposite to those who are residents in the capital islands, and they both regarding their equals from the mainland and hearing young people. Due to this situation and taking into account that deaf young people have potential and social capital enough to promote a change in their reality, Youth Department of the Federation of Deaf People Associations (DJS-FASICAN) wants to go further in its work and to contribute to their empowerment. In order to achieve this aim we are going to follow the topics and priorities established in the structured dialogue and the renovated political framework on youth matter. Through the start up of the VII Deaf Young from the Canaries Meeting under the motto: “The Structured Dialogue promote the Change”, we want to create a space without communicative barriers which stimulates dialogue, debate and democratic participation between 70 young deaf people from 14 to 30 years old coming from different islands of our archipelago (linked or not to deaf people associations) and representatives of deaf people associations, at local and national level, youth experts and public authorities with relevance in our territory. The goal would be to boost the work about politics, programs and/or actions related to youth which promote participation, social inclusion and equal opportunities of canarian deaf youth. The meeting will take place in Fuerteventura from 17th to 21th August 2016.At the same time we want to promote the democratic participation of deaf youth on deaf people association movement and to stimulate the creation of playful/educational spaces that contribute to improve their life quality. For that aim, we are going to implement different activities consisting of 6 conferences which include discussions by the young people and also the compilation of the accurate conclusions about the different contents: deaf people rights, deaf young association movement, sport and deaf people, and politics and public programs. The conferences will be conducted by representatives of deaf youth association movement, youth experts and sport experts and they will be approached from a theoretical and a practical point of view through the development of different dynamics which promote debate and reflection among participants. Likewise, various playful activities will be organized through which awareness and interaction among equals will be maximize as well working other aptitudes and attitudes. At the same time, different sport activities will be implemented to promote sport practice among deaf young people. And last, a debate about the situation and necessities of canarian deaf youth and the actions needed to change their reality, developing a structured dialogue between young participants and the responsible for youth politics. Through the meeting we aim to achieve several results: to promote social relationships between deaf young people from different islands; to offer useful spaces of leisure time; to make a report containing various proposals to articulate and/or focus the politics, programs and/or youth actions in the Canaries which promote the social inclusion of deaf young people that will be presented to local political representatives on youth matters in our islands, for them to study; to stimulate the active and democratic participation of deaf young people within youth sections of the Federation and of its member association through the accession of new members; to inform deaf young people about different contents regarding legal matters, youth and associative politics so they can defend their individual or collective rights. Finally we consider that with the start up of the project, in a long term we could make stronger the association movement of canarian deaf youth and its scope, we could link different work ways with local public administrations with responsibility for youth matters to make a real progressive implementation of politics that include and pay attention to the special situation of deaf youth and, accordingly, to make real a fairer and equal society.
