Being a full-time elementary school the Deichselbach School in Buttenheim would like to widen their offerings to their students, especially in teaching English as a second language.
As none of the teachers with a teaching qualification for English at the Deichselbach School Buttenheim has received any academical training in English language studies and teaching methods for English, some further training is more than necessary. Therefore, our teachers with a teaching qualification for English would like access to further training in English language studies and teaching methods for English so as to be able to offer bilingual teaching in the near future. This would allow them to help our pupils to acquire a higher standard of competence in their second language.
With a higher standard of didactic competence in teaching methods and improved speaking proficiency, we would be able to offer bilingual classes in subjects such as Physical Education, Music and the Arts to our full-time students.
At the elementary level, those subjects in particular work exceptionally well as vehicles for bilingual education. Elements such as games, singing and other natural interactions would help the students to learn English in a more relaxed and less rote environment.
We are convinced that our pupils will be able to reach a higher level of English proficiency by practicing in real, everyday communication situations.
Once bilingual teaching is established at our school, we aim to create opportunities for our students to directly communicate with other European English-speaking pupils of the same age so that they can apply their language skills in real conversation. As soon as possible, we intend to get in contact with teachers from other European schools to discuss and exchange our experiences with bilingual teaching and full-time schooling.
