Our school has a high proportion of pupils from other European and non-European countries. It is situated close to the border to France and Luxemburg. Those factors and the growing importance of languages in an increasingly global world made us realize the importance of a modern and innovative language department. Apart from that, we want to stress the importance of languages for other subjects, like sciences, as well.The project aims to improve the competence of our language teachers in using modern media and new ways of communication. This should make language lessons more interresting and more culturally fair. The importance of languages , not only for school, but for students` lives should become clearer. In a first step, an experienced language teacher is going to take part in an ALM course on the use of new media. The knowledge thus earned will be shared by her within the English department, so that it can be introduced to students of Year 5 and 6. At the same time, E-Twinning is going to be introduced to language classes and "Seminarfach"-classes in year 10 and 11 to teach students how to use this tool and to broaden their horizons.In a second step, teachers of Mathematics and Sciences are going to take English classes to be able to icorporate this language into their lessons. The students will find learning easier if knowledge is no longer isolated, but instead used in different circumstances and subjects. The importance of modern languages for sciences will be made clear as well.In the long run we expect a modernization of teaching in both the language and the science department, as well as a rising awareness of international and intercultural matters with students and teachers. Last but not least we expect an improvement of interdepartmental cooperation.
