ΒΕΛΤΙΩΝΟΝΤΑΣ ΤΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school was founded in 1855 and during its long history it has followed all the pedagogical developments. Within the framework of the new duties and responsibilities emerging from the financial and social crisis in Greece, directors and teachers alike need to update their knowledge and skills on matters related to the management of the new issues that they have to deal with at school daily. In addition, the increasing competition between students to enter the so-called “good” University faculties intensifies the pressure on teachers to improve their teaching and pedagogical knowledge and skills towards the development of a more effective school. According to the proposed project plan, the Director and two teachers of our school (Ancient Greek and Latin teacher and English as a Foreign Language-EFL- teacher) will travel abroad on job shadowing. In particular, the Director will visit the Finnish school Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola, similar to the Greek “Lykeio”, where he is expected to familiarize himself with the Finnish educational system, with the basic school legislation, with more specialized management and leadership skills and techniques, with any innovations of the Finnish educational model, and finally, with the ISO system used in the Finish educational system. Ralleio is a school with traditionally high performance in the field of Humanities and we believe that further insight of our teachers in Ancient Greek and Latin languages will contribute to maintaining this high standard. Therefore, one of our Ancient Greek and Latin teachers will visit on job shadowing the Italian school Girolamo Bagatta where she is expected to gain original teaching experience of the Latin language, to acquire further insight into the teaching methodology of this subject and into approaching Latin texts. Given the European orientation of our school, it is necessary to update and enrich the school’s foreign language teaching standards, especially that of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Consequently, our EFL teacher will travel on job shadowing to the Finnish school Gymnasiet Grankulla Samskola, a bi-lingual school in Finnish and Swedish, where English is taught as a foreign language, in order to gain further language teaching insight in a trilingual teaching environment. She is also expected to gain experience in working within the Finnish educational system, which she can share with her colleagues at Ralleio upon return. We have already signed agreements with the two afore mentioned partner schools including all the necessary points for successful cooperation. A similar agreement has been signed between the school principal and the two travelling teachers stating all their obligations and rights. The two travelling teachers and the school principal have to upload daily reports on the eTwinning platform while job shadowing as evidence of their presence and active participation in the project. We intend to make use of Europass to certify the professional qualifications acquired by the travelling teachers as well as of Mobility Europass to certify the added value of their participation in this project. Benefits are expected to derive from this project for: • The participating teachers • Ralleio teachers who will be trained by the travelling teachers upon return • Ralleio Ancient Greek and Latin and EFL teachers • Ralleio students as the final recipients of the improved and enhanced educational-pedagogical services stemming from this project • The school as a whole in the field of administration and general management of all the relevant issues, of hidden curriculum, of the school’s functionality, of the general school climate, of the school’s relations with the students’ parents and the local community, and finally, in the field of financial management • The school’s reputation, on which Ralleio has relied to attract students for 159 years thus ensuring its longevity. Total improvement of the learning process and the offered educational services is also expected, since a core group of trained teachers can make a difference raising the standard for the whole school community. Furthermore, the working connection with the Finnish and the Italian schools may well become useful for other Greek teachers and directors who would like to take advantage of such projects and partnerships in the future.
