Valorisation of the Mytilene Fortress of the island of Lesvos

The Castle of Mytiline covers an area of approx. 60,000 square meters and it is built over a part of the ancient city. It is structured in three levels (upper, middle and lower Castle) depicting three different styles: Byzantine, gatelouziki and ottoman. The Inspectorates aim is to restore and shape sections inside the Castle in accordance with the approved study prepared by the architect/engineer Kayer. Expected Results: Works to be carried out include consolidation of the stone pavement from Middle Castle to the Byzantine Reservoir, creating touring passageways, supplying power to monuments, removing of the old guardhouse and construction of a new one to comply with the study, repair the powder chamber as a visitors room, place signs around the Castle, remove earth, clean and create map drawings, pull down shaky buildings in the Lower Castle area and restore two of those buildings.
