Validation in ECVET guided maintenance training

The European maintenance sector needs a total system for developing the labour force. The result of the VEMT project is a combination of validation and training. Validation is proven to be a perfect tool to achieve a possible mobility of labour force and to optimize training in lifelong learning. This VEMT project, together with three other earlier LdV projects, form complete working tools to achieve practical oriented maintenance personnel in accordance with the actual requirements in Europe. The validation system will be used for both validation before and after short or full time courses and for already employed persons. The resulted tool is in production. The ValidMaint (www.validmaint.be) was a pilot project during 2005 – 2007. The result was a model for how to use IT-based tool in validation of technical subjects. 1500 questions with four to six answers were developed. The IT platform – ValidMaint – is a proven system and in production since 2007. 1000 individuals are tested and 150 have European certificate. The expand validation program is on website www.validmaint.eu. Earlier ECVET oriented project Vocational Training in Maintenance (VTM) is based on European Federation of National Maintenance Societies – EFNMS (www.efnms.org) – competence specification and project resulted in curricula for three EQF levels (www.voctrainmaint.eu). This competence matrix with detailed Learning Outcomes and credit points is the platform for validation aiming to measure the results after training. The matrix is a standard EN 15628. By using validation in maintenance sector, the quality level will increase. This is well proven by European certification of Maintenance Technicians. Today 47 technical subjects covers actual requirements. The results are in production and allow this unique possibility. From the industrial side it is important to validate formal, non-formal and informal competence. Today Europe has over 1 million persons involved in maintenance. Retraining will be needed for more than 100 000 per year. About 50 000 new technicians are needed annually. By using EFNMS, as an umbrella organization, for dissemination, a wide spread organization is already involved from the beginning. All National Maintenance Societies will continue the implementation process in Europe. This process will take a decade.
