Västervik 2015
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Since 1995 the vocational schools, Berufskolleg Viersen in Germany and Gymnasium Västervik in Sweden run a student exchange program focussing on electrician trainees. Mostly about 10 trainees take part in one exchange program which lasts for about two or three weeks. Up to now more than 200 trainees took part in the program in both countries. During their residence in the host country the students become acquainted with specific details of the vocational education of each of the countries involved. This is to say the German "Duale Ausbildung" and the full-time school based vocational education in Sweden. The participants are deeply informed about both forms of education and know to argue about the benefits of both forms of education very well. Moreover the participants complete a vocational practice in small and medium sized companies acting in the business of electric installation. The practice is for 10-12 working days. As a rule one single participant is attending one single company. They learn to know tools and materials which they do not work with in their home country. Differences in certain business procedures can be identified by the participants and lead to a best-practice-transfer in the long run in both countries, especially when the participants will find themselves in a management position in their following vocational career. During their stay in the host country the participants live in holiday homes to rent. They live in one group all together. They prepare their meals, wash the dishes and cloths, go for shopping - everything is organized by the participants on their own. Due to this the social responsibility of each member of the group of participants is trained. Thus the participants completely take part in the public life of the host country. The participants experience a lot about culture, geography, customs and traditions and the language of the host country. Instead of focussing on differences, the participants learn to admire the cultural variety of their countries.
