Up-skilling and Embedding Languages
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are a three form entry primary school and at Broad Oak we value and make the best use of our assets – our rich cultural diversity, our local community, our partnerships with other like-minded schools, our new buildings our extensive grounds - yet still being part of a major city. Our two-year project has used Erasmus+ funding to enable seven members of staff to undergo a programme of training in France. This improved the individual competencies of the participants and enabled them to develop their teaching on their return to the UK. This was then disseminated throughout the school to meet our European Development Plan objectives. Our European Development Plan identified a need to improve and develop: 1. curriculum changes 2. staff competencies in terms of language skills 3. a European dimension and develop a school link in France 4. in turn we aim to improve leadership competencies PQ France provided 8-day study visits for each participant, many aspects of which were individually bespoke. The structure of each visit consisted: 14 hours of bespoke language instruction 10 - 14 hours of methodology and pedagogy training targeted at the specific needs of the school and participants 1 full day in a French Primary school 10 hours of small-group guided tasks with a different focus for each cohort 10 hours of cultural visits and activities, giving a flavour of seasonal festivals and local traditions. PQ France ensured each participant was able to visit the same school. Through this cycle of visits over the two years, staff have been able to develop an understanding of a different education system and school life in France and share their experiences with pupils and colleagues. The project has widely improved the quality of our organisation’s regular activities as the impact has been across the whole school and is evident in cross curricular topics. - The teaching of French is planned and carefully timetabled to be taught across the whole school. - Pupils correspond regularly with their French friends in our link school. - French training now features in the school Continuous Professional Development time table, enabling the project to impact on all staff. - Teachers have raised confidence levels and a willingness to try new activities and top up the timetabled French sessions at intervals during the day. In addition to the improved language skills, there is a greater understanding in methodology and pedagogy competencies as well as cultural understanding. - There is a real ‘buzz’ around languages across the school including the staff and children and an increased involvement. - The project has certainly enabled us to raise the profile of languages across the school. As a result of the project, leadership competencies have greatly improved. The subject leader was able to develop her own skills in all areas of French teaching and in turn develop the confidence to lead the subject, supporting colleagues with the curriculum changes outlined above. Leading this project has supported her professional development and enhanced her project management skills. The impacts of our project have been disseminated within our school in the following ways: -During staff meetings, including phase meetings, Strand meetings and whole school INSETS. - We have used twitter and the school blog to update the children and families in our school community when participants were in France. - The Governors enthusiasm and support was relayed to all staff during a meeting celebrating the achievements of our school as this project has helped drive our school forwards. The project’s impact has also been widely disseminated outside our school community: -the MFL Lead has kept teachers across Manchester updated during regular PMFL leaders meetings The longer benefits of this project being the impact on children's openness to other cultures and future life opportunities. We continue to aim to be a school that the local community respects and admires into the future and one that has embedded languages into the curriculum.
