Under Aged Expressions (in Danish: Umyndige Udtrykt), is a project providing youth under the age of 18 the opportunity of democratic participation in political arenas through culture and art.In it’s pilot form, the project will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark offering 30 young citizens of Copenhagen Municipality between 13-17 years to create art pieces that the rest of the minors in Copenhagen can vote for. The 5 pieces, that get the most votes by the youth, will be exhibited in the Town Hall as a representation of the youth’s voice in the city council. Before doing the actual art, the youth will participate in dialogues, lectures and workshops around what society is and what hopes and dreams each of them hold to the future of their local community. An intensive bootcamp will facilitate the youth’s ideas and dreams for society into visual expressions, where the participants will be coached by professional artist and each create a single art piece.The goal is to boost young people's "public imagination": their ideas and thoughts about what kind of society they want to be co-creators of and give them a voice in the political arena through the arts/culture.The voting process will be conducted in collaboration with a local cultural and arts institution and primary and secondary schools in Copenhagen in order for the art pieces to represent as many minors as possible. The voting process will be facilitated in a way, that includes a learning journey for each voter so that s/he is empowered to take a qualified decision as to which visual expression will represent her/him the best. The project is focused on developing educational materials that can innovate democracy education through creativity and culture as well as create the space and opportunity for youth to be heard in political settings. Under Aged Expressions is a pilot project, with the aim of making is a yearly event in Copenhagen, spreading it to a number of Danish municipalities as well as creating an EU version, where minor EU citizens get the chance of offering their views and dreams for Europe to the EU-institutions.
