Kallela school is one of the three special needs schools governed by the town operating in Pori. As our school is located in the heart of the town, we are surrounded by several cultural and art institutions and we also find ourselves close to the national Pori town park and the river Kokemäki estuary, which has affected the focus of our syllabus.We have created a whole river Kokemäki-section in the new syllabus. In this educational entity we put into effect as much outdoor education as possible. We study the river and its environment during different seasons and also what role the river has played and continues to play as a means of transportation from a historical, cultural and economic point of view. Our learning environment includes the whole of the national Pori town park with the park in the Kirjuri-islet, the boulevards crossing the town and the Sports Center with the forest there. We also visit the nearby art institutions to carry out outdoor education within different subjects as stated in the syllabus.The aim of our project is to increase our teachers’ knowledge and skills in teaching methods and educational contents of outdoor education. We also aim at advancing the educational entity and its diversity.The five special education teachers in our school will be participating in different Outdoor Education teacher training courses in Malta, Cyprus and Iceland, after which they will be sharing their knowhow both with the other teachers in our school and those in other schools of the county. They will also take part in advancing the syllabus in regard to new methods and learning environments.We find it important to participate in foreign teacher training courses as it enables meeting colleagues from other European countries and perhaps finding partners for future eTwinning, job shadowing and teacher exchange projects.Participating in foreign teacher training courses will give us invaluable skills and knowhow in both the methods and contents of outdoor education and will further our knowledge in our target country and its educational system while creating cultural co-operation.Also, students will benefit greatly in more functional, practical and memorable teaching.
