"Two Prides, two worlds,..one Europe?
Start date: Apr 1, 2010,

The European Union encourages member states to prevent homophobia and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and to promote awareness raising campaigns on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) topics. Unfortunately, major differences exist between EU member states regarding legislation and public opinion towards LGBT people and issues. Our project wants to focus on the two different realities that are present in Belgium and Estonia. How is the visualisation of the LGBT life in these countries. How can we see this, what is the meaning of this for young people in their every day lives? We will organise debates, workshops and good practice sharings between Estonia and Belgium. In May, Belgian young people will attend the Baltic Pride and Estonian young people will attend the Belgian Pride. We will investigate how those are addressed in the media. During summer, we will organise a project week and discuss the meanings behind the Pride, how do people in society address it, how does media put it forward? Are there simularities in the different countries, are there differences? How far do those differences go in a Europe that promotes equality and non-discrimination everywhere? We will also broaden this topic and go deeper on visualisation and representation in the media in general, in other countries, what does legislation say about it, how can we empower ourselves to deal with this? The Prides, debates, workshops and interviews will all be documented during those periods and the result will be a documentary, that shows us if the Prides and LGBT life are indeed so different. That documentary will be the foundation for discussion and debate in and after the project week. We will use this material to go to our local groups, schools, youthwork and create discussion about the topic.
