Turku goes Europe - VET-students, apprentices and staff members gaining skills and competences abroad

Who? Turku goes Europe–Erasmus+ -KA1 -project is aimed at Turku Vocational Institute’s 18–25 year-old students of various fields. The students are mainly third year students. Turku goes Europe–Erasmus+ -KA1 -project is aimed also at apprenices of various fileds. Also staff members are projects target group: expecially the project is indirectly aimed also at teachers who instruct and support students during their international on-the-job training period or school period. -130 students and apprentices during project period - 30 staff members (25 teachers, 5 other staff memebers: study counselers, head of units stc) Why? The goal of the project is to improve students' and staff memebers' of Turku Vocational Instutute international skills, which are vital in ever-changing working life. The ability to cope in new circumstances, and working together with people from different cultures improve students’ working skills. Work experience gained in another European country makes it easier to find a job, especially the first one. And of course, working abroad makes language skills better. In addition to learning at work place students learn a lot also during their free time. Getting to know local people and local manners and culture in every-day life teaches a lot to students. Coping independently in a completely new environment improves students’ self-esteem. That also helps to tolerate stress. The students' goals of the on-the-job-training period are based on the goals of the curriculum. The evaluation will be carried out on the basis of the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET) by each receiving institute. This project will talso est a new 'International Study Path'. Indirect benefits accrue to the teachers who support the students during the on-the-job training. It increases their professional knowledge of the teaching systems and working life in other countries. It also makes their language skills better, along with their ability to help students to cope with changing circumstances. Where and when? The students will spend 4-8 weeks of their on-the-job-training period in a work place organized by the foreign partner institute or to school period to our partner school. Staff members' (techers') periods will last one week. Periods take place between autumn 2015 and spring 2017. The destination countries and the partner schools have been selected so that they service the students, the staff memebers and our institute. Each of the foreign co-operation partners take care of their own responsibilities. They are familiar with the Finnish educational system and wish to be involved in developing on-the-job training and ECVET-based assessment during the training periods. Turku Vocational Institute has previously co-operated with each of the international partners, so the quality of the on-the-job training in these organizations is guaranteed to be good. The destination countries are United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Estonian, Denmark, Spain and Italy.
