Training of Communicative and social competences to solve conflicts at school

As there were some problems at school regarding the pupils´social competences we decided to place the emphasis on their manners and behaviour in our project. At the first coordinators´meeting we found the slogan "TOGETHER" to symbolize our project.Setting up partnership with link classes established a personal contact between the participating pupils, with an exchange of letters/cards at the beginning of the project (introduction letter), for Christmas/winter, for Easter/spring and at the end of the school year.A questionnaire was developed to start the project in order to show the problems pupils have and to recognize the reasons for conflicts. Work on the topic helped our children to become socially and emotionally more skilled. In the training of empathy own feelings and feelings of others were recognized and verbalized, and pupils learnt to tolerate differences between the feelings of different people. Photos, role plays and drawings were used to recognize and to express the various emotions and to handle them.Then the children learned and practiced the rules for a better communication and to solve problems without violence. They took a look at books about conflicts and how to solve problems and they drew illustrations to show the impressions they gained.On a "European Project Day" and a "Day of Etiquette" the children presented performances showing conflict situations and the use of non-violence. A manual on etiquette made by all partners with rules for a polite communication and good manners was presented and some classes acted according to the rules. Furthermore all the other products of our Comenius project were presented.At various meetings attending pupils worked together on projects, as learning helpful phrases in English and other languages, geography and songs of the partners, and performances on the topic.
