Training for FISTA personnel
Start date: Dec 31, 2014, End date: Dec 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Finnish International School of Tampere is an English-language CLIL-school in Tampere, Finland. Working in the school requires practically fluent English skills because there are students with various backgrounds from native English-speakers to those who cannot speak English almost at all. Therefore it is of utmost importance for the staff members to master English at a high level. Also, as the school is a relatively new as far as the "international school" is concerned, managing it every day is an ongoing process and therefore it is relevant to gather new experiences from different European schools and how their daily work is managed and handled. Furthermore, the school wishes to be a forerunner in educational and pedagogical technologies and, hence, they form a very significant aspect in the school's guiding principle. The school is applying a grant for 4 staff members to educate themselves in English, management and pedagogical technologies. FISTA will improve the service provided for the region as a whole by developing pedagogical approaches and so bringing the school up to date educationally. The participants are the principal, two classroom teachers and a Finnish as a second language (F2) teacher. The principal faces challenges every day with international school's management and therefore it is important to find tools to develop the skills in that area. Also English language is an important aspect of her work and further studies in the language will make the work better, more efficient and more suited for the international school's purposes. For the classroom teachers, developing skills in technological innovations in pedagogy will provide the school with excellent chances to meet the pedagogical standards of a 21st century school. F2-teacher needs English in her work as well, although she teaches Finnish. The linguistic background of the students is varied and English works as the only common language at the start of studies at least. Therefore, it is vital that her English becomes more fluent so that communication between the teacher and the students is more natural. The project will become very fruitful to the whole community and the region as the results of the training and skills acquired are shared and distributed to broader use. The school will become more attractive and more modern, and the service provided for the students and parents will improve. English is the language of tuition at FISTA and being able to communicate fluently and effortlessly with the students and guardians makes the school a tight-knit community. Moreover, modernising the school after the renovation starting in the summer will demand knowledge of 21st century technologies and skills. The school will be able to make use of this knowledge through training and subsequent sharing.
