Tracing Amazon soil organic carbon input from land to the ocean (SOURCE)
Start date: Apr 1, 2010, End date: Mar 31, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

"Comprehensive knowledge about fluxes and processes related to the continental erosion and the subsequent delivery of organic carbon (OC) to the oceans via rivers is one of the priorities for a better understanding of the global carbon cycle. However, the fate of terrestrial OC in rivers as well as in the oceans is far from understood. In particular, the transport and transformations of soil OC in the oceans is poorly known although it is the largest terrestrial carbon pool. In this context, the overarching goal of the SOURCE project is to trace soil OC export across the land-ocean interface by applying newly developed techniques for soil OC tracers and by combining approaches from biogeochemistry, soil science, and oceanography. It is foreseen that this highly multidisciplinary research project will result in a more precise understanding of flux, age, and burial efficiency of soil OC at the land-ocean interface."
