Together Old and Young: young children and senior citizens learning and developing in intergenerational community spaces
Start date: Nov 1, 2012,

Together Old and Young - TOY is a intergenerational learning project involving senior people (55 years +) and young children (0- 8 years) in community based non formal activities. It is based on the premise that constructive relationships between young children and older people can be built to the mutual benefit of both generations and can contribute to the social cohesion of communities. This multi-disciplinary, multi-lateral project has been designed to respond to the lack of opportunities for generations to come and learn together in European countries. It brings together the worlds of older care, active aging, senior volunteering with community services for children in 7 countries: Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. Partner organisations will collaborate in research (desk and action research based on Positive Deviance), the capacity building of practitioners and senior volunteers, and the design and implementation of intergenerational community-based pilot actions in 2 areas: 'Nature and Outdoor Learning' and 'Arts, Culture and Creativity'. Outputs include: 1) research review on benefits of intergenerational practice involving seniors and young children; 2) illustrated compendium of "positive deviance" existing practices that already involve intergenerational learning; 3) training tool kit comprising a capacity building module for diverse groups of adult learners (practitioners, senior volunteers and intergenerational coaches);4) Intergenerational pilot actions;5) Local and international stakeholder events. Selected outputs will be available in the languages of the participating countries. The project will enhance the level of inclusion of senior citizens in community-based initiatives involving children. The numbers of intergenerational learning initiatives and their reach will increase. Skills and knowledge regarding intergenerational learning will be broadened in civil society and amongst policy makers.
