Theatre for Europe
Start date: Mar 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Right wing populism and anti-European populism raised attention in an increasing amount of European countries. Due to the current migration situation and wave of refugees coming to Europe, the anti European atmosphere in some countries, e.g. Germany, Hungary and France got even worse. The project “Theatre for Europe” will counteract these tendencies within our society. It aims to foster concepts of an open Europe as an opportunity and to cherish cultural diversity as a resource for welfare. With the fact having a Greek and a Russian partner from Samara (located at the very eastern side of Europe), we want to broaden the project geographically as much as possible and thus bring in young people’s views and ideas from Western, Southern and very Eastern Europe on these topics and interconnect them with each other. By using theatre as method we want to empower the participants to discuss and develop a wider awareness regarding European prospective, concepts and human values. The “Theatre for Europe project will bring together 18 young people from Ulm/Neu Ulm, Larissa, Greece and Samara, Russia, from July 29th till August 08th 2016 in Ulm, Blaubeuren and surrounding, providing them with a common framework to live and work together and to learn from professional theatre artists and coaches. The partner organisations combine the question regarding a European awareness with a culture approach, using the creative discipline theatre as method for exploration and expression. Diversity consciousness and reflection of own experiences of being discriminated or being a refugee will play important roles in this process. Questions that will come up may be: How do we want to live together in Europe, how do we perceive our country and Europe regarding exclusiveness – is it a closed box or an open stage for everyone? The participants will explore and express experiences, visions and demands regarding being a European citizen and create a theatre performance, guided by professional artists and coaches from the fields of theatre, having also experiences in dance, music and media. There will be three public performances, one in Blaubeuren, two in Ulm city centre. Aims and objectives of the “Theatre for Europe” project:• to discover, live and cherish cultural diversity• to bring together 18 young people from Ulm/Neu Ulm, Larissa and Samara, providing them with a common framework to live and work together and to learn from professional artists and coaches • to provide space for intercultural learning, exchange of views and cultural perspectives as well as development of visions for the future• to encourage and empower young people to express their feelings and wishes, ideas and demands by culture; to expand their cultural horizons and to counter discrimination and racism • to develop a theatre play on the topics migration, cultural diversity, black box Europe?, which includes ideas and experiences of all participants; and which will be performed in the public• to reach a broad audience with the project results, thus raising public awareness and showing constructive options for actions countering discrimination and racism.Target group are young people from 15 to 19 years.
