Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project will improve the teaching and learning of mathematics of forty pupils in the early years (5 to 7 year old) using informal education methods giving children the opportunity to gain first hand experience through direct involvement and hands on practice. Topics covered will be a) length, b) weight, c) capacity, d) flat shapes, e) 3D shapes. There will be six participants from Zejtun Primary School who will participate in six mobilities spread out in a period of two years. Members of the Senior Management Team (SMT) will observe other SMT members in their daily work at school. Notes will be taken and discussed with the SMT. Members of the teaching staff will visit classes and observe methods used in the teaching of mathematics. Meetings with school staff will also be organised to share experiences and good practice. The long term benefit from the project will be that all children as from their first years at school will be helped to acquire and develop mathematical skills. This will have a positive effect on the assessment and results obtained in mathematics.
