The creation of a new secondary school senior cycle subject, ‘Politics and Society’, requires the recruitment and up-skilling of a new generation of teachers who can teach the new syllabus to school students (age 16-18 years). The subject has a European dimension and the curriculum includes some examination of EU institutions and policies. There is also a heavy emphasis on reflective and active citizenship. This project responds to the introduction of ‘Politics and Society’ at senior cycle level and proposes to practically support and strengthen the EU dimension to the subject. The project envisages a partnership with teaching associations, school teachers and EU studies academics in the delivery of this new subject and has three components: 1) Workshop support for teachers – one day in duration; involving 15-20 teachers; and offered to multiple groups in multiple locations. 2) Dedicated website/online resource pack – to include updates on the EU; pedagogical advice; assignment support; and e-learning materials. 3) Ongoing support will be provided through an annual conference – focused on presentations which address a) ‘The State of the [European] Union’; b) Pedagogical Advances in the Study of the EU; and c) Sharing Best Practice: Reflection and Discussion. Delivering the project will involve input from research/PhD students in terms of programme design and delivery. It will also entail technological support from the UCC learning technology team and a website designer. It is anticipated that the project will impact on upwards of 100 secondary school teachers over the life of the project, and potentially more in the years to follow. In turn these teachers will impart their knowledge of the EU to large numbers of future generations of Irish school goers. Influencing teachers and teaching content during the initial roll-out phase of this subject, has a potentially positive impact on longer-term plans to strengthen the study of the EU in Irish schools.
